You find a manhwa that looks worth reading, search for it, and get a dozen websites claiming to have it. Then the official app introduces you to Coins, Points, Gems, passes, and a timer. Finding the story was easy. Working out how to read it suddenly feels like homework.
The good news is that you do not need to use every platform. Start with the service that officially publishes the series you want, check its free chapters, and understand the unlock rules before spending money.
This guide covers WEBTOON, Tappytoon, Manta, and Lezhin Comics, plus an important update for Tapas readers. It focuses on official English reading options and the practical differences between them.
Information checked: October 9, 2026. Catalogues, offers, prices, and access rules can change; check the current series page before purchasing.
Quick comparison of official manhwa platforms
| Platform | Free reading options | Paid access | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| WEBTOON | Free episodes; Ad Pass on eligible episodes | Coins, including Fast Pass | The unlock option shown on each episode |
| Tappytoon | Opening chapters and Time Till Free on eligible titles | Points; optional Club membership | Chapter eligibility and the displayed timer |
| Manta | Previews and eligible Free Pass titles | Membership and Gems | Whether your title is included with membership |
| Lezhin Comics | Free episodes, promotions, and eligible Wait Until Free titles | Coins | The series notice and event conditions |
“Free app” does not mean every chapter is free. Likewise, a monthly membership does not necessarily include every comic the service offers.
1. WEBTOON: understand the episode labels
WEBTOON is an official reading platform with Korean manhwa and comics from other countries. You can browse series and read available free episodes without buying a chapter bundle first.
For locked content, look at the option attached to the episode. Fast Pass lets readers use Coins to access certain episodes ahead of their free release. Ad Pass lets readers watch an advertisement to unlock eligible episodes. Some episodes may require Coins.
The important word is eligible. Do not assume that an ad option exists for every chapter, or that every locked episode will eventually become free. WEBTOON's own support pages describe different unlock routes, so the current episode screen is the place to check.
A practical approach: read the available opening episodes before buying Coins. If you are following an ongoing series and can wait, check its free-release countdown. Paying to read ahead may be unnecessary for the way you want to follow it.
For a concrete example, Tower of God has an official English page on WEBTOON. Start with that page rather than choosing a website just because it appears first in search.
2. Tappytoon: Points and Time Till Free
Tappytoon publishes officially licensed comics and novels. Those two formats can share a title, so make sure you open the comic listing if you want illustrated chapters.
Paid chapters can be unlocked with Points. There is also Time Till Free, which provides timed free reading for selected comics and chapters. The timer and eligible chapters are shown by the service; it is not a promise that you can finish any series without paying.
Opening chapters give you a chance to test a story before committing. Use them to check the translation, artwork, and pacing. A premise can sound perfect while the actual reading experience leaves you cold.
Tappytoon also offers an optional Club membership with Points and other benefits. Compare its current terms with your reading habits instead of assuming membership unlocks the entire catalogue.
A practical approach: if you read slowly, check the Time Till Free section first. If you want to binge, count the chapters you intend to unlock and inspect their Point costs before topping up.
3. Manta: check the membership badge before subscribing
Manta offers both a membership library and titles or episodes that can be unlocked with Gems. This distinction matters more than the word “unlimited” in a promotion.
Its membership gives access to the Unlimited Library. Some titles are available exclusively through Gems, while some membership titles can also be unlocked with Gems. Manta's Premium plan includes a monthly Gem allowance alongside membership access.
Before subscribing for one particular comic, open its series page and check whether it has the Membership badge. Manta also provides an Unlimited filter to help identify included titles.
Free previews and selected Free Pass stories offer another way to explore the catalogue. Their presence does not mean the complete platform is free.
A practical approach: make a shortlist of stories you actually want to read, then check how many are included. A membership may suit someone reading several included series, while a Gem-only title needs a separate budget.
4. Lezhin Comics: read the promotion details
Lezhin Comics offers paid episodes using Coins, alongside free opening episodes and promotional reading options.
Its Wait Until Free system applies to eligible titles. According to Lezhin's official guide, reading a qualifying title starts a timer; after the required wait, the next episode becomes available free for a limited period.
Check the comic's notice bar for the specific event conditions. A free-reading promotion can have limits on the episodes included and the time you have to read them.
Also check the age rating and content information when choosing a series. A platform's catalogue can include stories intended for different audiences.
A practical approach: try the free episodes first, then compare the normal Coin requirement with any current offer. A discount is useful only if it applies to the series and chapters you intended to read.
An important update about Tapas
Older recommendation lists often include Tapas as a regular option for buying Ink and reading manhwa. That advice now needs an update.
In its official End of Service FAQ, Tapas states that its service will end on March 31, 2027, at 23:59 Pacific Time. Acquiring additional Ink, including free Ink, stopped on October 1, 2026. Existing Ink can be used until the stated end date, but previously unlocked content will also become inaccessible after closure.
If you already use Tapas, read the official FAQ for the latest account and content-access information. For new readers, it makes sense to check where a story will be officially available beyond that date rather than relying on an old app recommendation.
What “free chapters” actually means
There are several different forms of free access, and mixing them up is a quick way to get frustrated.
- Free opening chapters: a sample of the story before later episodes require another unlock method.
- Timed free access: a qualifying episode opens after a wait. The reading window may be limited.
- Ad-supported access: an eligible episode opens after you watch an advertisement.
- Promotional access: selected episodes are temporarily available through an event or offer.
Before starting a long binge, inspect the later episode list. The first ten free chapters tell you very little about the cost of reading the next hundred.
How to find the official version of a specific manhwa
Search for the title together with “official English,” then check the publisher or platform's own listing. Recommendation posts can help you discover a series, but the official page should confirm where to read it.
Different translations sometimes use different English titles. If your first search fails, compare the creator credits, cover, and premise. Do not decide that two listings are the same story just because their names look similar.
Also distinguish the novel, comic, and adaptation. A novel listing will not give you comic panels, and a streaming page will not tell you where the manhwa chapters are published.
Before you spend money, check these four things
- Access: is the title available to your account and in your region?
- Cost: how many chapters are locked, and what does each unlock require?
- Duration: is access temporary, membership-based, or attached to a paid episode unlock?
- Renewal: if you choose a membership, when does it renew and what exactly is included?
Coins, Points, and Gems can make the real cost harder to notice. Convert the bundle price into an approximate cash cost per chapter before buying. You do not need a complicated spreadsheet; you just need to know what the amount on the payment screen will get you.
Where should you start?
Start with the platform that has your chosen series. Read its free opening chapters, check the later unlock rules, and decide whether waiting or paying fits your reading habits.
There is no single app that automatically wins for every reader. The useful choice is the one that publishes the story you want under terms you understand.
